Sonata/Sonatina Festival

1. Students of BNMTA members are eligible to enter the competition for a non- refundable fee of $25. Students of teachers who are not members of BNMTA will pay a non-refundable entry fee of $35.

2. Students will be divided into four groups by grade: K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12.  All students will be given written feedback from the judges.  In addition, the judge or judges shall ​select up to three students from each group to perform at the Honors Recital.  Judges reserve the right to not select any ​recital designees.​ Judges' decisions are final.

3. Students who wish to perform must have had at least 12 months of piano lessons and have permission from both parent and teacher to enroll.

4. All music must be performed from memory. There is no repertoire list, students may choose any sonata or sonatina from any time period and play 1 or 2 movements from the same work. 

5. Music should be performed without repeats, except in the case of a da capo, which completes the form of the piece.

6. Registration, including payment, must be received by deadline. 

7. BNMTA members will be expected to work, monitor or assist in some way the day of the festival.

8. Practice rooms will be made available for each performer, who will be assigned one 15 minute slot only, 25 minutes before the assigned performance time. Performers should register at the front table in the lobby a minimum of 30 minutes before the assigned performance time.

9. Honors recital designees will be announced and when each group is completed. The evaluation forms and participation certificates will be given to the teachers to give their students at a later time. The honors recital will take place immediately following completion of all groups. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the recital.

10. Audio & video recording is prohibited in classrooms, but individuals may record their own children during the recital. No flash photography is allowed.

11. A student may not be entered in more than one level in any one year. 

12. Students must bring one original copy of their music with measures numbered. No photocopies will be allowed. No repertoire changes will be allowed after the registration deadline.

13. Any student entered in the wrong group, arriving at the wrong performance time, or playing the wrong piece or the wrong movement will be permitted to perform, to receive their certificates and critique sheets, but will not be considered for the honors recital.

14. Dress code:  Casual dressy, please no flip flops or jeans.
